Our First RV Trip of the Season at Delaware Seashore State Park

Beach days, brewery stops, great food, family time, and a fun start to camping season

There’s just something about the first RV trip of the season that feels extra special.

After months of waiting for camping weather to return, packing up the fifth wheel, loading up the dogs, and finally pulling into a campsite again feels like the official start of summer. For our first trip of the season, we headed to the south side of Delaware Seashore State Park for Juneteenth weekend, and from the minute we arrived, it definitely felt like camping season was in full swing.

The campground was absolutely packed, the beach was busy, and the whole area had that fun holiday-weekend energy that makes summer camping feel exciting. Even with the crowds, we were just happy to be back in the RV, back near the water, and back doing what we love.

And honestly, it’s been a pretty great start to the season so far.

Back at Delaware Seashore State Park

We’re staying on the south side of Delaware Seashore State Park, and if there was ever any doubt that summer camping season has officially started, this campground erased it fast. It has been busy all weekend, with campers packed in, beach gear everywhere, and plenty of people soaking up every bit of sunshine they can.

As soon as we got everything set up, we had one thing we were especially excited to test out—our new tankless hot water heater.

After recently replacing the old one, we were really hoping this would be one of those upgrades that instantly made RV life better. Thankfully, it worked perfectly right from the start, which felt like a huge win. There’s nothing like kicking off the season with an RV upgrade actually going your way.

A hot shower after a long setup day? We’ll absolutely take that as a good sign for the rest of camping season.

A Low-Key First Night (and a DoorDash Adventure)

By the time we got settled in that first night, we decided to keep things easy and skip going out to dinner. Instead, we ordered Agave through DoorDash and stayed at the campsite.

We went with two steak burritos, queso, and chips, and it definitely hit the spot after a long day of getting camp ready. The food was really good, and it was nice to just relax at the site instead of heading back out.

The only problem? Apparently getting food delivered to this campground is a bit of an adventure.

We’ve ordered DoorDash twice since arriving, and both times the driver ended up at Big Chill Beach Club on the other side of the bridge instead of the campground itself. Not exactly ideal when you’re hungry and waiting on dinner, but honestly, at this point it’s become one of those funny “only on an RV trip” stories.

At least the food eventually made it to us both times.

Rain in the Morning, Beach Weather by Afternoon

Yesterday started off with a couple hours of rain in the morning, which is never the most exciting way to wake up at the campground, but thankfully it didn’t stick around. By later in the day, the weather cleared up and turned into one of those really nice beach-town afternoons where everything just feels relaxed again.

And today? Absolutely perfect.

It’s been sunny, 78 degrees, and just breezy enough to keep it comfortable—basically the kind of weather you hope for when you book a beach camping trip. So today has officially turned into a beach day, and we’re more than okay with that.

Sometimes the best campground days are the ones where you don’t overthink it. Grab the chairs, head for the sand, and enjoy being there.

A Quick Trip to Milton, Delaware

On our second day, after taking the dogs for a walk, we decided to get out for a bit and take a ride to Milton, Delaware—home of Dogfish Head Brewery.

Of course, there was no way we were making that trip without stopping in and picking up some Dogfish Head merch. It was a fun little side adventure and a nice excuse to explore somewhere off the campground for a few hours.

That’s one of the things we always love about RV trips like this. Even when the main goal is to relax at camp, it’s fun to mix in a few small outings nearby—especially when there’s a good brewery and a little shopping involved.

Family Showing Up at Camp Is Always a Good Thing

One of the best parts of this trip so far was having our son Aiden drive down from Providence, Rhode Island to spend some time with us.

He hit a ton of traffic on the way down, so by the time he finally made it to our site it was around 5:30 PM, but it was still great to have him there. There’s just something about having family show up at the campground that makes the whole trip feel even better.

Once he got in, we all got cleaned up and headed out for dinner.

Dinner at Chesapeake & Maine

That night we went to Chesapeake & Maine, and it ended up being one of those meals that just felt like vacation in the best way.

I ordered the Cacio e Pepe, which was a black peppercorn-crusted fresh catch served over house-made pasta with Pecorino Romano, Parmesan, ground black peppercorns, and garlic bread. It was rich, flavorful, and one of those dishes that instantly makes you happy you ordered it.

Heather went with the Mushroom Cakes, made with roasted oyster mushrooms, red pepper, fresh parsley, and breadcrumbs, and served with avocado aioli, Old Bay fries, and coleslaw. Definitely a great choice if you want something a little different from the usual seafood-heavy beach menu.

Aiden kept it classic with the Smash Burgertwo juicy beef patties topped with American cheese, caramelized onions, thick-cut bacon, lettuce, and tomato.

And to top it off, Aiden and I each had a tequila oyster shooter, which felt like the perfect way to lean into the whole coastal vacation vibe.

It was one of those dinners that just added to the trip—good food, family around the table, and the kind of evening that makes you want to slow down and enjoy every bit of vacation.

Beach Day Mode

Today we’ve kept things simple and made it a full beach day.

After campground setup, food runs, the trip to Milton, and dinner out, it felt good to slow things down and just enjoy where we are. Sometimes the best part of an RV trip isn’t packing the schedule with activities—it’s sitting in a beach chair, listening to the waves, and not feeling rushed to do anything at all.

That’s exactly the pace we’re going for today.

So Far, This Trip Has Been a Great Start to the Season

So far, our first RV trip of the season has had a little bit of everything:

  • A packed holiday weekend at Delaware Seashore State Park

  • A successful first test of our new tankless hot water heater

  • Two DoorDash mix-ups that somehow both ended up at the wrong place

  • A side trip to Milton and Dogfish Head Brewery

  • Family visiting camp

  • A great dinner out at Chesapeake & Maine

  • Rainy campground mornings followed by perfect beach weather

And honestly, that sounds like a pretty solid way to kick off camping season.

For Now…

The trip isn’t over yet, but so far Delaware Seashore State Park has been the perfect place to start the season. Between beach time, campground life, family visiting, good food, the dogs settling right back into RV mode, and a few funny delivery mishaps along the way, it’s already been exactly the kind of trip we were hoping for.

If the rest of the weekend keeps going like this, we’re off to a pretty great start.
